In a recent interview, Dr. Jean-Marc Seigneur from the University of Geneva announced that the institution is working on a plan to introduce a detailed course on Facebook’s new digital currency called Libra.
According to Dr. Seigneur, blockchain technology and advancements in the financial world are a significant part of Geneva’s interest, which means that a course about the Libra coin will attract a lot of students. Switzerland’s popularity as a location with highly financial focus inspired Dr. Seigneur to start working on a course about the much-awaited digital coin.
The University of Geneva will start offering a course on programming and blockchain technology in September 2019, and Dr. Seigneur’s idea is for Libra to be an essential part of the material taught throughout this course.
Libra and the University of Geneva’s Blockchain Course
Project Libra was first announced by Facebook earlier in 2019, and according to the project whitepaper, the digital currency will officially launch in 2020. In that same document, the Libra Association explains that:
Libra is a simple global currency and financial infrastructure that empowers billions of people.
During his interview, Dr. Seigneur explained that the Blockchain course offered by the University of Geneva is divided into four main modules. The first module comprises of more general concepts about blockchain technology, and it will serve the purpose of an introduction to the semantics of this field. Once the first module is completed, students will continue studying blockchain and distributed ledger technology in greater detail, predominantly through analyzing the Libra coin.
The University of Geneva will be able to benefit from collaborations directly with professionals from the Libra Association, as the not-for-profit organization has located its headquarters in the Swiss capital.
Blockchain technology is now becoming a significant part of financial and IT education, as the technology spreads beyond curriculums, to the very organization and administration of educational institutions.
