The University Grant Commission (UGC) calls on higher education institutions around India to prepare for the Fit India initiative, launched by India Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The letter was an adamant invitation for schools to start preparing for participating in the initiative, as allowing time for physical activity is among the top priorities for the educational system in India.
What is the Fit India movement?
The Fit India movement is an initiative started by Mr. Modi to boost sports education and physical activities in schools and universities across the country.
To pique the interest of educational facilities, Mr. Modi has organized a televised opening ceremony, which will be held at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi on 29 August.
The challenge Mr. Modi has given to everyone for that day is to walk at least ten thousand (10,000) steps and participate in local events part of the Fit India movement.
Sports and physical activity
Sports classes are a fundamental part of the school curriculum, as physical activity is one of the best ways to boost young adults’ immune systems.
Recently, Uganda’s health minister expressed an opinion that there should be compulsory sports classes for students above a certain age, as this is the best way for them to stay healthy. Not only that, but sports classes are one of the most effective methods for battling childhood obesity.
Mr. Modi’s Fit India initiative is a commendable effort to try and motivate schools and universities to offer a better variety of sports activities to their students. Hopefully, a large percentage of educational institutions will respond to this government invitation and will start preparations for 29 August.
