The Philippine (PH) Department of Education (DepEd) aims to improve quality education by transforming the Educators Academy.
Revamping the National Educators Academy
According to PH’s DepEd, reviewing the current curriculum will not be enough if they fail to synchronize it with a change in the Educators Academy.
Teachers also need upskilling and reskilling towards better quality education.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones ushered a statement regarding the need for additional training for teachers.
A new curriculum offers new learnings. Now, we are left with the challenge of how our teachers can keep up with the changes. There is aa need for upskilling for both areas to work out together in harmony.
The Education Secretary is concerned with the ability of teachers to keep up with the demand for a fast-paced education system now and onwards.
Quality teachers are needed
The challenge of coming up with quality education for PH students relies heavily on the teachers. It is why Briones believes that their learning and teaching skills are crucial in achieving the Department’s goal.
To achieve its goal, Briones urged the immediate transformation of the National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP). The order was issued earlier in May of 2019, under DepEd Order No.11.
The Educators Academy is in charge of three key components: Program and development, Training, and Research.
But, the Education Secretary pointed out that NEAP hasn’t been fully utilized and constrained by the overlapping roles and functions of various bureaus and government agencies. For the Educators Academy to be efficient, the proposed transformation aims to clear out the roles needed that will lead to the training and development of quality teachers.
NEAP is well underway
The study on how to improve NEAP structure and performance started two years ago and completed near the end of 2018. The recommendations were then reevaluated by October 2018.
Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan spearheaded the transition team for NEAP.
The need to develop skilled teachers and school leaders make the NEAP transformation urgent. It also focuses on training the huge number of entry-level teachers that will sone brave the frontlines of the education brigade.
When the Department of Education launched the “Sulong Edukalidad” slogan, it included the goal of providing constant innovations in teaching.
