The government of Swaziland has recently announced that there will be no new employments in the educational system until further notice. This decision has caused faculty members across the country to protest, as there is now a crisis in the educational system in Swaziland.
The government is also struggling to give out funds allocated for education. Thus schools are suffering, and many of the teachers have not been receiving their salaries for a while. This situation is very worrying, and the educational system in Swaziland is on the brink of collapsing.
On 18 June, The Swaziland National Teachers Association (SNAT) organized a demonstration in protest of the government’s recent decisions. According to teachers, there have been no new hires across the industry, and the vacant positions in the educational system are piling up. Unfortunately, teachers who have not yet left their jobs are burdened with more students than they can handle.
Swaziland student-teacher ratio
The student-teacher ratio of every country is an important indicator as to the well being of its educational system. If Swaziland does not take urgent measures to address the current crisis, the student-teacher ratio in the country will become unbearable for faculty members.
According to recent research, one of the worst student-teacher ratios is currently in the Indian educational system, where there is one teacher available for twenty-four students.
Because of the severe lack of staff, some schools are forced to let go of non-teaching personnel as well. At some institutions, students have to take care of the duties of gardeners and cleaning staff, as the schools no longer have funds to pay for such services.
