Most students are not confident of decisions they make on a career path which means that their decision may be based on fear, uncertainty and the urge to fit into what is considered prestigious courses.
Career path is one of the decision teenagers freshly from high school is supposed to make. The approximate age for these teenagers is mostly around 16 to 18 years. What some may not know is that the decision they make will influence their entire adult life. This decision is tense and they need to be guided into such situations.
In Canada, the rates of university admissions and graduation has gone up over the past few years. This upward trend is a positive thing and should be encouraged, however, good decision making that resulted in these students taking the courses they did and following a particular carrier path may not be the right ones.
Impact of big decisions on students
Erin O’Rourke, an expert in the education sector has spent a lot of time analyzing these phenomena. She has tried to make sense of how these decisions affect these kids such as the psychological aspect of this decision and if it is very soon for them to be making this decision.
She had admitted that at that stage of life for these kids, most of these kids have yet to figure out what they want to do with their lives. They, however, know of the intensity of this decision and they do not hide it behind a brave face. She stated:
We live in a world where [these kids] have been socialized from a very young age to [believe that they] can be anything, how, in a world where you’re told that you can do anything or be anything, could you choose one thing that you want to be?
She proposes that as parents, we should be open-minded to the kids and helpful in making them make the required decisions. Guidance should be offered to these kids at any given time. When they finally come up with their decision, guardians should evaluate those decisions together with the teens to help them plan for a better future.
