Stormzy: A beacon of hope for black students at Cambridge

Stormzy A beacon of hope for black students at Cambridge

It is a shame that Cambridge has always had a rich diversity of white students. It is a shame that between 2012 and 2016, Cambridge University could not even register a single black child under its name. So is the story with Oxford University too.
It is depressing and hurts the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students who try to register themselves in these universities because they feel so alienated and alone there. People of different societies like ‘Black Men of Cambridge’ or the student union of BME have raised their voices to raise awareness.

Stormzy aims to kill the disparity

In such a scenario, Stormzy, the English rapper has come out to assist the black students of Cambridge. There are students in Cambridge who have spent as the only black person on the campus for three to four years. This is really intimidating for BME students. With Stormzy’s intervention, black students feel empowered. It proves that black students too can take admission to these universities.
It is a known stereotype that on average, a black family earns less than a white family. With the step taken by Stormzy, it ensures that black people, irrespective of their color and the background they come from are no less intelligent than any other student at Cambridge or Oxford or anywhere else.

Disparity is toxic to Stormzy

Studies based on the culture and lifestyles of the BME group have found that ever since their childhood, BME students are subjected to some kind of discrimination in one way or the other. If there’s a black and white student, with the same grades, it is more likely that the white kid will get the place over the black.
Such a racist environment is toxic not only for a school or university but also for the whole nation. Black people serving as teachers and faculties in the universities are less likely to continue their jobs after a year. As a matter of fact, at this moment, across all UK, there are only 25 female black professors.
When racism has its roots so deep in such prestigious universities as Oxford or Cambridge, the contribution by Stormzy can’t be appreciated enough to level the playing field for everyone.
