Sri Lanka PM announces plans for an improved education system

Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced the government is working on plans to bring education in the country to the level required by the 21 century. According to the PM, Sri Lanka is in dire need for an update in educational standards.
PM Wickremesinghe’s announcement came at the inauguration ceremony of around two hundred and fifty new school buildings across the country. The ceremony was held at the Peradeniya National College of Education on 3 July.
According to the PM:

Sri Lanka has to think about how education is going to be like in the next few decades.

A new generation in education

During his speech, PM Wickremesinghe heavily emphasized Sri Lanka’s ambition to become equal to worldwide standards in education by 2050. While speaking in front of the current classes at Peradeniya National College, he said that the students graduating now are the future of the country, and so their schools should enhance their opportunities for the future.
One of the main improvements the government is planning to introduce is the modernization of classrooms. PM Wickremesinghe envisions that shortly, classrooms will be equipped with smart technology and tablets, instead of blackboards and even textbooks.
Of course, such drastic improvements cannot happen overnight, which is why the government has decided to introduce new technology gradually. During the initial stages of the improvement program, only advanced classes will have the opportunity to use tablets.
On a separate note, Sri Lanka’s Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has recently announced that a new bill on education is currently being prepared by the government, which will introduce significant improvements.
Significant reforms in terms of education are on the rise in the region as India, Sri Lanka’s neighboring country has also introduced a new education plan for the whole country.
