After graduating from secondary education, the first biggest decision you’ll ever take in your lifetime is which career path you are going to choose. Most of us rely on peer pressure, parents, and through observation of the careers, we used to encounter daily.
For privileged families, they enroll their children in career development counseling to give them a clearer mind in choosing their career path. But for those who cannot afford to avail of such counseling, they have limited knowledge in different careers, which sometimes leads to poor choices.
Mr. Aditya Bose, a Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology, graduate from the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, founded ProBano. A web-based platform for career development counseling. Up to date, around 12,000 students across India have access to the platform for counseling services.
Choosing a career
Aditya himself didn’t even follow the career path he chose when he was in high school, he had Computer Engineering in his mind back then, since he knew he was good with computers and information about career options was lacking.
Eventually, he chose Information Technology at the IIEST. And during his stay in the university, he encountered a business plan based competition organized by the National Institute of Technology. He then draws from his experience in career development to come up with the idea of ProBano.
At a young age, I remember asking my peers why they chose their respective engineering courses. Most of them replied that it was out of society’s stereotyping and their parent’s unfulfilled dreams.
ProBano is a startup which functions in a web-based platform that offers career counseling for high school students, with videos and training programs on different courses such as business, computer science, engineering, law, etc.
The platform works as a mix of online materials, personality assessments, tests, and responsive support. The program consists of two cycles:
- The first cycle consists of exploring self-interest and personal passion.
- The second cycle then proceeds to how students will pursue their chosen passion, which also involves skills training.
The cost of the services offered by ProBano is way cheaper compared to actual career development counseling centers. Price ranges from $1.34 to $67, depending on the plans a student wishes to avail of. So far, the program has inspired positive feedback from students, especially those from rural areas that belong to the lower bracket income of society,
