Employment trends millennials bring to the industry

The year 2020 will be a generation of the Millennial workforce, this generation will be the largest contributor in terms of workforce in India. Millennials will compose 75% of the total labor sector in India by 2025.
As the largest composition in the upcoming employees of the Indian industry, how will employers adjust to the expectations and trends this new brand of employees will bring in?
Millennials are heavily inclined into work-life balance, flexible work shifts, and career growth. What are the things that companies need to know about the employment trends this generation brings?

Here are some common employment trends for 2020

  • Mobile usage at work: In a digital era, mobile phones are usually part of everyone’s lives. Millennials spent a lot of hours using their handheld devices and for some reason even during work hours. Some to the extent of applying for a new job via mobile while working.According to research, more than 50% of Millenials in India used mobile phones to look for jobs. This is a concern that employers should address in order to limit the frequent job-hopping of employees.
  • Employment gaps: This generation is prone to employment gaps, reasons like having a baby, travel, acquiring new skills, and having some time off from work. Employers traditionally favor applicants with continuing work experience on the assumption of up to date work knowledge. But with the current trend, employment gaps will soon be a part of the norm and won’t be a big factor for returning applicants.
  • Annual performance reviews: This generation likes to work at a fast pace. Surveys find that annual performance reviews don’t contribute that much in their work progress and find it ineffective. The new generation prefers having quarterly or mid-year performance evaluations to help them gauge their skills a lot sooner and seek further improvements.
  • Title or Task designation of employees: Job description transition will be the new trend this 2020. The shorter time frame for performance evaluations makes quick decisions for employers to either upgrade an employee or be replaced with a more competitive one. Employees nowadays want something new every now and then, fewer people from this generation settles for routine tasks and stagnant careers.Titles will not matter that much as long as their job transition is proactive and not stagnant.
  • Mental health and stress management: Along with a fast pace work system comes a toll for employees mentally and physically. In order to keep up with the stress work brings, team buildings, monthly celebrations, events on special occasions, and company parties are the best way to do it. A cheaper way to combat stress in a busy and hectic environment.

Millennials might bring a new trend to the work industry in the years to come, the important part is that productivity and work quality is maintained. Change is inevitable, as long as it is for the common good and success of the industry.
