Commotion at Makhanlal Chaturvedi Natl University

INDIA – On Tuesday, 23 students dismissed for staging a protest within campus grounds. Students went furious after two visiting professors at Makhanlal Chaturvedi Natl University posted aggressive tweets against the media a few days ago.
Through an inquiry committee, the university administration decided to sanction the students who staged the demonstration with expulsion until prior notice. During the expulsion period, the involved students will not be allowed to take classes, take part in practical and written examinations, and also prohibited within university premises.

Support for the expelled students

The students charged with expulsion got the strong backing of former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.
According to Chauhan in a tweet he said,

Students at Makhanlal Chaturvedi Natl University have been expelled for raising a legitimate concern. The university is trying to suppress the voice of the students and crushing democracy. We should not allow this to happen to the students and ruin their future.

The legislator is calling for the university to reverse its decision on the student’s expulsion. He also asks that the university administration will hear out the complaints of the students regarding the two visiting professors.

Cause of the uprising

It was a social media post by two visiting professors from Makhanlal Chaturvedi Natl University that gained the ire of students at the same university.
The angered students staged a protest Friday evening inside the university campus to criticize the offensive tweets made by the professors.
As a response, the university administration sent out police to disperse and remove the student from the campus.
Afterward, an inquiry committee was formed to distinguish the students involved in the commotion using security camera footage inside the campus.
During the deliberation on December 14, the disciplinary committee named 23 students involved in the protest and sanctioned them with expulsion for obstructing and disturbing official work hours during the demonstration. Tuesday night, the expulsion was issued and carried out by university administration.
A similar incident concerning university lecturers posting personal opinions draws ire from the opposing point of view that happened recently at Cardiff University.
