Hong Kong universities used to be favored by mainland students based on their incredible international reputation. Moreover, Hong Kong universities are close to China’s mainland, and this made learners feel at home.
This trend is, however, shifting because Hong Kong universities have become unappealing to mainland students based on the hostile political temperatures witnessed.
Political chaos upsets mainland students
Beginning June, protests erupted in Hong Kong after a bill that was to permit the extradition of criminals for trial in mainland China was proposed. This bill, however, has been suspended.
As a result, the optimal productivity of Hong Kong universities has been endangered by the political tensions experienced. Mainland students have, therefore, been forced to reconsider their choices because of the unrelenting economic uncertainties and political chaos.
This trend may prove detrimental to the education market in Hong Kong as it may continue being unappealing to mainland students.
Safety is a crucial aspect of a person’s life. As a result, this issue has emerged to be a primary concern for many mainland families about the prospect of their children studying in Hong Kong universities.
Moreover, discrimination is an issue being presented because some mainland citizens are facing various injustices in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong universities experience a downtrend
From September 2, various Hong Kong universities, such as the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have experienced protests and strikes. This has been the trend since the new semester started.
For instance, on September 2, a massive number of Hong Kong students gathered at CUHK and started chanting protest slogans. The situation was terrifying, especially for mainland students. For example, one of them was besieged when he shouted that he was Chinese.
Hong Kong universities used to be famous across the globe in areas, such as business, law, and finance. Today, their shining star is dimming as their reputation is being jeopardized by the political chaos.
