First-ever woman candidate to get Singapore Police Force Scholarship

Shermaine Ang beams with pride as she turns out to be the first female officer to achieve the coveted Singapore Police Force Scholarship by Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs.
As Ang conversed with a few women police officers at the Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) in 2017, she learned about Singapore’s exemplary police culture, which boasts of nothing but equal opportunities and justness.

Ang’s journey to Singapore Police Force Scholarship award

The 19-year-old emphasizes that the police force in Singapore is all about the emancipation of women in society. With no male prejudices in an industry wherein males otherwise play a preponderant role, Ang discovered her new desire – joining Singapore police force (SPF) and working shoulder to shoulder with the male officers in safeguarding the city.
The proud bearer of the acclaimed scholarship award further asserts that she was encouraged by other officers to join the force because of her empathetic nature. According to her, the officers had to come to terms with a much darker side of Singapore, not visible to the outside world.
While all these aspects weld her desire to join the police force and contribute to the city’s upbringing, on Monday, she was bestowed with a reputable Singapore Police Force Scholarship (SPFS), a highly regarded scholarship offered by Public Service Commission.
Following the illustrious award ceremony, which was presented by the Minister for Home Affairs and Law, K Shanmugam, Ang has instantly become known in the public eye for setting the trend for future female police aspirants.

Minister of Home Affairs expresses his concerns on technological advancements

In his speech, Shanmugan asserted that technology has proved to be both boon and curse in Singapore’s crime scene. While it continues to simplify the otherwise burdensome paperwork for police officials, it has also caused a rapid buildout of cybercrimes, he says.
He further emphasizes the unwarranted use of cryptocurrencies and offline drones, which have become a root cause of maximum monetary damages in the country.

Singapore’s interests in Home Team career

At a ceremony, which involved 23 other scholarship recipients, Shanmugam pronounced that the country has seen a rise in attention to enlisting in Singapore Police Force.
Students have shown an increased earnestness in a Home Team career in the last five years, ranking third only to teaching and open scholarships, he proclaims.
The SPFS is granted every year to the students who have set forth impeccable leadership qualities in their field of studies.
Following the honor, the awardees will dedicate six years to mastering the facets of investigation and the art of profiling and conceptualization.
Meanwhile, Ang expressed her gratitude to the scholarship committee for bestowing upon her the honor to join the esteemed police force. Although she claimed that her time at the Officer Cadet School was not among the best moments in her life, the onerous challenges only made her will to be a part of the SPF stronger.
