Can policymakers pitch in the encouragement for higher education?

If steps are made in the encouragement for higher education, this asset is ensured of contributing to the nation’s growth. In today’s world, it is higher education, which is considered as the final and ultimate step into making a student a national asset.

Encouragement for higher education makes countries thrive

In a 2018 research, it is clearly visible that the countries that have invested heavily in higher education have a better economy and a higher GDP. Singapore invested heavily in polytechnics and diplomas, which today makes them one of the largest manufacturers in the electronics field.
As a result, it is one of the wealthiest countries across the globe. China, despite having the largest population, has given birth to the second-largest economy in the world. Today, China has 12 universities in the latest QS top 100 rankings, which just shows what encouragement for higher education can do.
India, being a rapidly developing country, observed the technology trend. Within the last decade, India has produced the highest number of engineers in the world but still below the optimized ways to help in the encouragement of higher education. Although India, in its 90s, was ahead of China in the higher education enrollment ratio but today China has surpassed India by 11 million students.
There is still a huge gap to be covered if India believes in its dream of becoming a $5 trillion academy. Should policymakers realize the benefit, they could help in the encouragement for higher education.
Higher education in India has been stagnant for more than a decade. The same old systems, policies, and curriculums are being followed since the 2000s. The world has completely changed since then. It is the role of policymakers to realize the new trends in the world and act accordingly.

Steps in the encouragement for higher education

Prime minister Modi’s government has been heavily focused on the digitization of everything ever since he became the PM. It’s about time that India should legalize online courses and online degree concept.
Successful countries like China, Brazil, and even the rapid-developing South Africa have legitimate online degree courses. This is a step that should be taken in the encouragement for higher education.
The global issue in higher education has always been its cost. Although countries like the US, the UK have similar problems but there are student financing options as well. Hence, they have better higher education enrollment ratios than the others.
Work experience is the best teacher. Not recognizing the learning through experience is really a shame. Proper policies, schemes to test and assess the learning should be developed. Not only the government should be doing this, but the big sharks in the private sector should put their feet ahead to give the students of the nation their higher education privilege. Again, the Government of India should look at this as a crucial step in the encouragement for higher education.
Here’s a thought:

Think tanks are privately funded not-for-profit institutions that generate ideas and debate on the nitty-gritty of public policy. In addition to strong research skills and a grip on issues concerning the country as well as the world, professionals working in think tanks possess communication and influencing abilities to engage with either policymaker in government for policy advocacy or the broader public through opinion pieces in print media or online media.

As many have said, and it is true indeed, India has the potential to become the largest economy in the world, but it needs to realize the steps to the encouragement for higher education, the best way to do it or is there something more effective that can be done.
