An elite private school in Australia has been hit with a $2 million lawsuit by a former student who was bullied while studying there. The lawsuit has also named the schoolmates who carried out those attacks.
A former student of one of Queensland’s most elite private schools, Brisbane Grammar School, is suing his former school for what he went through during his years of study in the school.
Elite private school sued
In the court filings, which have been lodged in the Supreme Court, the student highlights years of torture and bullying from his former schoolmates. The student was admitted to the school in 2013 through a soccer scholarship and stayed in the school until 2015.
The student described how his former schoolmates, named in the court filings, carried out the bullying. He described that sometimes he would be attacked and punched by a gang of students within the school. He continued by saying that, at one point, the students ganged against him and used a computer cord to choke him.
School failed to intervene
On what the school should have done to prevent his bullying, the lawsuit offered very little on how the elite private school intervened on his behalf. The now 20-year-old former students remember how in February of 2015 he reported to his father about the assaults, and who in turn informed the school of the alleged bullying incidences.
His expectations were that the school would step in and help address the bullying he was going through. However, that was not the case as a few weeks later, the bullies continued terrorizing the student unabated.
$2 million price tag for the lawsuit
The lawsuit will cost his former elite private school a total of $2miilion if he wins. The student said he still continues to suffer the emotional impact of the bullying up to this day. He also said the bullying left him with traumatic brain injury, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and body dysmorphic issues – leaving him unable to get a job.
The lawsuit also claimed that the school breached consumer laws by failing to provide a safe environment where the student could learn and thrive. The lawsuit continued by saying the impact of this bullying has led to permanent damage to the student’s life, which has resulted in his difficulty to be employable again.
