Using the country’s native language will enable even those who are not that literate to understand and relate to the digital content. The Vice President finds it inappropriate to create content in foreign languages, where most of the basic citizens cannot understand.

“What is the essence of creating informative content if the viewers cannot understand it because it is in a foreign language?”

Digital literacy should be improved

Vice President Naidu made a speech at the Pandit Dwarka Prasad Mishra Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing (PDPM IIITDM) in Jabalpur. He reminded the students and staff about their Digital Social Responsibility to the country.
He reiterated that the low level of digital literacy in rural parts of the country is caused by digital content, which is not in the Indian language.

“If we want our people to be really informed, let us refrain from using foreign languages in our digital content.”

The government wants the education system and research capabilities of the country to be improved on with the use of the mother tongue. Using the mother language promotes unity in achieving the goals set by the government.
In a data report, it was found out that nine of the ten online users in India are more favorable in using the Indian language. To fully serve the purpose of digital literacy, contents should be in the Indian language. The government is urging developers and digital experts to come up with content that will be easier for the majority of the users to understand.
