Chinese students in American colleges and universities are continuously decreasing in numbers. Previously, the number of Chinese students in these institutions more than quadrupled in the last ten years.
This trend is, however, diminishing, and this has forced some American colleges to retract their strategies as they substantially depended on Chinese students for their growth.
Public Land-Grant Universities feeling the pinch of fewer Chinese students
According to an international education analyst, Rahul Choudaha, public land-grant universities were considerable beneficiaries of the Chinese enrollees’ boom.
This is, however, not the case because the US-China trade war has elevated tensions between the two nations, and many institutions of higher education in the US have been affected.
For instance, US universities have recorded declines of at least one-fifth in the number of new Chinese students this fall.
As a result, public land-grant universities have been made to reset their growth expectations, especially at the undergraduate level.
Low Chinese students’ enrollment affect Midwest and Northeast universities
Choudaha noted that universities in the Midwest and Northeast showed demographics of low enrollment growth from Chinese students.
Most of these institutions were heavily relying on Chinese enrollees for high growth. For instance, English programs were being utilized as incredible pathways, but this has reasonably changed.
The national-level enrollment data has shown that, for two straight years, American colleges have recorded reductions in first-year international student enrollments.
International competition in the education sector has risen at an alarming rate. This factor has also propelled the declining number of Chinese enrollees in US universities.
China has also been undertaking incredible steps to propel its higher education system, making students from this nation prefer it to the American one.
For example, China’s institutions for higher education are populated by approximately 500,000 international students as of recent data. The country is starting to emerge as one of the premier destinations for international students.
