CHED scholarship for incoming college students suspended due to the COVID-19 budget cut,
No new CHED scholarship grants
Several incoming college aspirants fear that they might not be able to enroll for college this academic year 2020-2021. The reason behind this is the recent announcement of the Commission of Higher Education regarding their scholarship program.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has issued national budget circular 580, a budget cut on all government agencies, to redirect funds in fighting COVID-19.
Gail, a student from Zamboanga Sibugay, wants to take BS Criminology for her course in college. But with the suspension of all new CHED scholarships for this year, she is worried if she will be able to enroll for college, given that she is coming from a low-income family.
Mariel, coming from a simple community in Cotabato City, was for hoping for the CHED scholarship to fulfill her dreams of becoming a teacher and serve her community soon.
CHED scholarship grant
The scholarship grant by CHED is offered to outstanding public students who graduated in high school with honors and a GWA of at least 85. CHED prioritizes scholars with the following qualifications to avail the college scholarship grant
- Filipino Citizen
- Parents’ combined annual gross income should be below 400,000
- No existing government-funded scholarship
- Not a graduate of any degree in college
A lot of students coming from public high schools nationwide are looking forward to avail of the scholarship offered by CHED. But with the recent budget cut announcement, they should start resorting to other scholarship grants available out there.
With the budget cut imposed on CHED, the agency can just barely fund the existing scholars and cannot fund new additions to the grant.
