Sophie Lucas, a Belgium researcher, has indicated that she is researching ways to use Regulatory T lymphocytes (Tregs) for cancer treatment. The success of the research would give hope to millions of cancer patients around the world over a possible cure.
New research from Duve institute that is linked with the Catholic Univesity of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL) is giving hope to cancer patients. The research was carried out by a Belgian researcher, Sophie Lucas, who is promising using the body’s own defense to fight the presence of cancer in the body.
Sophie has indicated that the process will be much safer than the current methods used to treat cancers. She argued that by deploying our body’s own defense systems, it would be safer than both the radiotherapy and chemotherapy used for cancer treatment.
Cancer treatment proposal
Sophie said that her work would involve using cells from the lymph system known as Regulatory T lymphocytes, or Tregs. These cells are central to the body’s immune system, and she argued that she had found a way to use them to fight cancer.
Sophie indicated that the process would involve using the Tregs to fight cancer. Sometimes, the body’s immune system attacks healthy tissues causing the development of numerous conditions such as type 1 diabetes and lupus. To avoid this, the body produces Tregs, which regulates the excessive immune reactions, which can be dangerous by itself.
Tregs cells inhibit action against cancer cells
The Tregs play an important role in the human body, but sometimes they also contribute to the growth of cancer.
When cancer attacks the body, the body’s immune system reacts by fighting the tumors. However, as the tumor grows, the Tregs cells inhibit the fighting of these cancer cells. This results in increased growth of cancer cells which sometimes spread to other parts of the body.
Sophie proposes a solution to make Tregs and the body’s immune system work together to fight cancer cells. The idea is plausible because it will optimize the use of the body defenses to fight both the development of the cancer cells and the spread of the cancer cells.
The researchers have expressed optimism that they will find a solution to use Tregs to help in the fight against cancerous cells in the body. The research is also giving hopes to millions of cancer patients around the world about a non-invasive cancer treatment that could save their lives.
