Researchers from the University of Leeds have found out that students who frequently eat breakfast achieve better grades than those who rarely take breakfast.
Breakfast has been suggested to positively affect learning in children in terms of behavior, cognitive, and school performance.
The survey was taken on 294 student’s exam results in West Yorkshire. The result revealed that 29 percent rarely ate breakfast on school days, 18 percent ate breakfast occasionally, and 53 percent regularly. It revealed that students who rarely ate breakfast accomplish poorer results than those who always have their morning meal.
The study which was published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health disclosed a connection between eating breakfast and better grades in the United Kingdom.
Nutritionists have also argued that eating breakfast helps a child concentrate better at school. Adding that eating unhealthy food such as sweets and crisps for breakfast, do not have any helpful trait in academic development.
The research also disclosed that regular food consumption during the day also increases students’ academic performance and concentration levels.
Food Research and Action Center
Findings of the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) support the claims made about the connection between better grades and breakfast.
The finding contains how eating and not eating breakfast affects academics, brain function, and general wellness of students.
The FRAC result shows how hunger can lead to low math scores, concentration, behavior, emotional, and academic problems. It revealed that children who are often hungry are more likely to repeat a grade.
Better grades ascertained by breakfast programs
Outside academics, children who take breakfast show decreased anxiety, depression, and hyperactivity. Taking breakfast can improve a child’s general nutrition by providing her/him with necessary vitamins and minerals and can actually reduce the risk of Ulcer, amongst many other deficiencies.
These issues lead many schools to participate in different school breakfast programs including the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) breakfast program, amongst many others. These programs provide breakfast for students who wish to participate.
