The problem with education is that as we are heading towards the future, it is becoming costlier than ever. Whenever there’s an improvement in the quality of the education system, it becomes costlier. Numerous methods have been tried to improve the quality of education like reducing the numbers, more practical approach and more extra-curricular activities. However, these luxuries are available at schools with a decent budget. Public Schools in Alaska can’t afford such luxuries and yet they have managed to improve the quality of education. This is a result of a school-wide ban on mobile phones during the classes.
Although its already considered bad practice to use cell phone devices during the class in the schools in Alaska, there were no strict rules or regulations for this. With the sudden outbursts of social media apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok, students have been more distracted than ever. It has now become a habit to check the phones frequently for new stories and updates. Due to this urge, students were unable to avoid bringing these devices during the classes too.
However, certain schools in Alaska like Lumen Christi have officially banned the use of cell phone devices in the classrooms. The staff and the faculties have already reported positive feedback on student participation in the class. There are simply no side effects of this at all. Students are now more involved in the class discussions.
The problem with a ban on mobile phones
Where all this seems fine, it is still impossible to issue a district-wide ban on mobile phones during the classes. The reason for this is the last thing that the district school board would have thought of- Parents. With the recent incidents about school violence, natural calamities, and shootings, parents support children to carry their cell phone devices to the classroom. This ensures that children can contact their parents if they need to.
Despite this, the teachers and even the parents feel that students should spend lesser time on their mobile phones and focus more on studies or other activities, especially in school. The Anchorage School District is yet to discuss how they can successfully implement a ban on mobile phones.
