School administrators are now monitoring student’s social media behavior in line with the school’s code of conduct.
Social media behavior affects the school’s image
It is no ordinary for school staff and administrators to mingle with the social life of their students, but times have changed, social media behavior can easily soil a person’s reputation or even a whole school.
According to Russ Uhing, Director of student services for Lincoln Public Schools:
This is just how they (students) are now today, and we have to adjust to what it is.
Just last week, in a meeting for school administrators at the Lincoln East High School, several social media photos surfaced and were discussed. First on the list was from a party last weekend, along with other more.
In line with the social media photos that reached the school administrators, 23 students were subjected to disciplinary actions for violating the district’s code of conduct. Students under a school’s varsity program and other extracurricular school organizations are subjected to a code of conduct agreement.
District school’s code of conduct
Not all students are subjected to the monitoring of school administrators for social media behavior, only those under the code of conduct oath with their respective schools. Every other student who is not part of the varsity team or any school-affiliated organization is not necessarily subjected to such disciplinary sanctions.
Families have the option of appealing any sanction imposed on their children with the school administrators and district officials.
School administrators monitor the social media content of students under the agreement. Parents, other students, and the whole Lincoln community are also part of the support system. It makes it easier for authorities to monitor their delegates if everyone offers a lending hand in providing important information.
Lincoln public school administrators do not limit violations to drinking liquor, smoking, and taking illegal drugs. They also have close monitoring in cases of bullying and racist behaviors.
Even though social media behavior occurs outside school premises, there is a strong chance that similar incidents might happen inside the school. Besides, what student-athletes and school representatives behave outside reflects on the image of the school and its administrators.
LPS administrators are assuring the parents that in every disciplinary action they impose on student offenders have undergone strenuous consolidation of evidence, both physical and verbal aspects. They deliberate each case with high consideration to create a fair judgment to those involved.
