US universities have recorded declines of at least one-fifth in the number of new Chinese students this fall.
In nearly a decade, US universities have experienced a boom from Chinese students. This trend is, however, changing because US universities are experiencing sharp declines based on factors, such as the political tensions, instigated by the US-China trade war.
Chinese students affected by trade conflicts
Observers and administrators in US universities have expressed their concerns about the detrimental effects instigated by the US-China trade conflicts.
The situation has become dire to the extent that visiting Chinese students are treated as though they pose some security risks. As a result, visa complications have become inevitable for these learners.
Additionally, international competition in the education sector has risen at an alarming rate. This factor has also propelled the declining number of Chinese students in US universities.
China has also been undertaking incredible steps to propel its higher education system, making students from this nation prefer it to the American one.
US universities crafting new strategies
Many US universities are not oblivious to the fact that the number of Chinese students they enroll will continue dwindling because of uncertainties, such as the US-China trade war.
As a result, they have come up with new strategies such as undertaking intensive recruitment drives in various parts of the globe.
On the other hand, some US universities, such as Bentley University in Massachusetts, have contemplated reviewing the applicability of various graduate programs considerably affected by the decline in Chinese students.
Notably, this learning institution recorded a drop in Chinese students from one hundred and ten (110) to seventy (70) this fall.
Other US universities reporting considerable drops include the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Vermont with a twenty percent (20%) and twenty-three percent (23%) decline respectively.
China has been the primary contributor to international students studying in the US. Its three hundred and sixty-three thousand (363,000) student population depicts one-third of all foreign students.
Realistically, Chinese students are continuously avoiding US universities and heading to other countries to obtain higher education. And all because of the trade war between the US and China.
