UK students put at risk by mental health care delay

Mental health care delays jeopardizing UK students

UK students experiencing mental health challenges have been compelled to wait for nearly twelve (12) weeks for them to get help from their respective universities.
This has proven detrimental as considerable concerns have been raised about how these students may become suicidal because of these delays.
For instance, undergraduates from London’s Royal College of Music were forced to wait for the longest time as some of them experienced delays for almost eighty-four (84) days.

UK students’ mental health compromised

Statistics obtained from British universities depict a severe situation, whereby the learning environment of undergraduates is suppressed by delays in the mental health care area.
According to the former health minister, Sir Norman Lamb, the significant delays were worsening mental health ailments, such as depression and anxiety. As a result, these hold-ups could prove damaging to the mental health of undergraduates.
Lamb noted that the delays taking place to the tune of twelve (12) weeks were scandalous as they were worsening the situation given that many learners were settling on committing suicide.

Mental health conditions prevalent among UK students

Lamb stipulated that many UK students had become victims of various mental health challenges. As a result, they necessitate prompt help so that their problems can be averted.
Nevertheless, UK universities are not doing enough to remedy this situation as evidenced by the considerable delays witnessed.
Lamb also proclaimed that the mental health problems had become common among the student populations and this scenario ought to be addressed promptly through urgent measures.
Since 2010, a worrying trend has been witnessed because mental health challenges among UK students have been elevated fivefold.
Across the globe, mental health problems, such as depression, have wreaked havoc. For example, over the years, depression leading to suicides or attempts of it has increased in the US, despite so many awareness campaigns and efforts from mental health experts.
