Member of Parliament for Salisbury John Glen has voiced his opinion that the South Wiltshire University Technical College in Salisbury should not be closing down as an educational institution.
The owners of the UTC property have decided to close the school because according to them, the institution is not financially sustainable. Mr. Glen has actively urged local business and society to take up the challenge and run the school so that the educational process can resume as normal.
MP John Glenn has advised the owners that South Wiltshire UTC is an important educational institution, which should not be closed. However, if a willing local investor steps in, both sides could benefit.
Closing down of schools
There is a worrying tendency in the number of schools in the United Kingdom for the past several school years. According to the British Educational Suppliers Association, the number of working schools in the country has been progressively dropping.
The association’s research shows that during the 2001-2002 school year, there were more than thirty-four thousand (34,715) schools in the UK. However, there has not been a school year ever since, when the number of schools did not drop. The result is that in 2017, there were more than a thousand fewer schools in the country, about thirty-two thousand (32,133).
One reason for this trend is the lack of funding for the educational system in the UK. Recently, an official from the Department for Education raised the alarm that Northern Ireland is facing problems with finding funding for its educational system. This alarm, however, goes for the whole country, as the number of schools has dropped significantly over time.
